Warhammer Illustrator John Blanche Retires from Games Workshop

The renowned artist who defined the visual style of WH and WH 40K has left the company after nearly half-a-century.

John Blanche, a renowned illustrator and artist known to many as the founding father of Warhammer and Warhammer 40K's visual style, has reportedly retired from his longstanding position at Games Workshop, a tabletop game manufacturer.

Throughout his illustrious career, Blanche made significant contributions to Games Workshop, notably through his involvement with White Dwarf magazine, Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, and Warhammer 40,000 games.

Blanche's artistic style, characterized by its dark and gothic elements, has left an indelible mark on the game worlds created by Games Workshop. His memorable cover art, illustrations, and intricately crafted miniatures have played a pivotal role in shaping the company's imaginative realms. After an impressive tenure of 46 years, Blanche has decided to part ways with the company, following a period of poor health.

The news was originally reported by Game Designer at Remedy Entertainment Tuomas Pirinen, who called Blanche's departure "an end of an era" and noted that "we will see more of John's genre-defining art as he can work projects of his own".
