Check out this nice project by どろんdoron.
An artist known as どろんdoron has demonstrated a neat way to make 3D noses look like they do in anime when they turn into dots or lines once the character looks straight into the camera.
In the artist's post on X/Twitter, the outline of the girl's nose gradually reappears when she moves her head and disappears depending on the angle. The effect is seemingly achieved through backface culling, a performance optimization method that "avoids drawing polygons that are determined to be facing away from the camera" (via TouchDesigner).
"What this means is if you are looking at a polygon (a triangle for example) and you look at the position of vertices 0, 1 and 2, if they make a clockwise loop, then you are looking at the back face of the polygon. If they make a counter-clockwise loop than you are looking at the front face of the polygon."
Backface culling is available in the render options in Blender.
This is an interesting application of the method for something that is at the front of the face. But it works pretty well with this and other projects by どろんdoron, which you can find on their X/Twitter.
