Windows Central Eliminates Most of Its Gaming Journalists
Everyone except for Jez Corden has been fired.
The sharp and pointy scythe of job cuts continues to clear the landscape of gaming journalism in 2026, now hitting Windows Central, which has almost entirely dismantled its gaming division, leaving only Executive Editor Jez Corden on the team.
The news comes from Jez himself, who revealed on the latest episode of the Xbox Two Podcast (timestamp 29:34) that last week, the entire gaming team at Windows Central was laid off, leaving him as the sole full-time member. He explained that the layoffs were ordered by WC's parent company, Future PLC, and impacted all full-time staff in the gaming department, leaving only him and the freelancers to keep the section running.
It is currently unknown exactly how many people were affected, with the only confirmed departure being former News and Gaming Editor Rebecca Spear, who commented on her layoff on LinkedIn.
Interestingly, Jez also mentioned that, beyond Windows Central, "pretty much every brand of Future" was affected, suggesting that other gaming websites owned by the company – PC Gamer and GamesRadar+ – may have also been impacted.
Previously, mass layoffs also affected such outlets as Eurogamer, Polygon, Giant Bomb, IGN, and TheGamer. Reports show that over the past two years, more than 1,200 gaming journalists were let go and never returned to the industry, and that's only counting full-timers. When part-time, freelance, and amateur writers are included, the total number of departures from games media since October 2023 exceeds 4,000.
