Wow Classic Season Of Discovery Devs Don't Plan To Focus On Balance

Instead, they want to prioritize fun.

In an interesting departure from the norm, developers behind World of Warcraft Classic's new Season of Discovery have shifted their focus from maintaining perfect balance to promoting fun within the game.

Nora Valletta, the lead software engineer, shared in a PC Gamer interview that the team is more concerned with ensuring the enjoyment of players rather than achieving flawless equilibrium among all races, classes, or specifications.

"It lends to our goal of balancing for fun rather than perfect balance."

"When balancing for fun, we are a lot more in tune with players' feedback on what is fun. Some feedback we receive is along the lines of, 'This ability is good, but I don't really enjoy using it.' And sometimes our data may reflect that. So we're definitely spending more time focusing on, 'Okay, maybe this ability is powerful or strong, but is it fun? Is it just a button you press or is it something that you can use at opportune times that interact in a way that is really fun and exciting?'"

Instead of stressing over the numerical balance of abilities, the team is investing more time into evaluating player feedback and understanding what players find fun and exciting about the game.

Even with the introduction of world Player vs Player (PvP) on Season of Discovery servers, this focus on enjoyment over competition remains. The primary objective is to ensure that rewards are attainable for all players, which further emphasizes the importance of engagement and enjoyment in the game.

It's very much divorced from the idea that everything has to be pristine from a numbers standpoint, as if we have to be focusing on some kind of competitive game mode in Season of Discovery, which we don't," said Valletta.
