Xbox Boss Admits "It’s Been Too Long" since Xbox’s Last Big First-Party Exclusive
The head of Xbox Phil Spencer said he acknowledges fans' frustration about the lack of major first-party releases in recent years but noted he is "excited" about the year 2023 which will have a "great lineup of games."
CEO of Microsoft Gaming Phil Spencer has recently admitted that there's been a lack of major releases coming out on Xbox Series X|S in recent years.
During a podcast released on the YouTube channel Same Brain, the head of Xbox shared that he acknowledges that it's been too long since a big first-party exclusive was shipped for Xbox saying that he understands players' frustration about this.
"One thing we've definitely heard loud and clear is that it's been too long since we've shipped what people would say is a big first-party game," Spencer said. "We could have our excuses on COVID and other things, but in the end I know people invest in our platform and they want to have great games."
By the end of 2022, Xbox Game Studios will have published five games (As Dusk Falls, a Forza 5 expansion, an Age of Empires re-release, Obsidian’s Grounded, and Obsidian’s Pentiment), however, only one of them (Obsidian’s Pentiment) will be the game developed by an internal studio.
Spencer, however, noted that despite the lack of major first-party releases in recent years, he is "excited" about the year 2023 which, according to him, will have a "great lineup of games."
"We've talked about games that are coming, and those games are tracking well. [...] I look at 2023 and there’s a great line-up of games coming that I’m excited about," the Xbox boss said. "Getting our first real Xbox first-party games out of Bethesda, having them ship with Redfall and Starfield, will be a lot of fun."
Additionally, Spencer said that Xbox was doing "a lot more work" on PC and is currently working on a big update for the Xbox app on PC that will launch in the next few weeks.
