Seamus Blackley, one of the original creators of Xbox and a developer who pushed the frontiers of gaming, shared his thoughts on a major restructuring that took place recently at Microsoft.
The reorganization included the retirement of Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, who was succeeded by Asha Sharma, former President of Product Development for Microsoft's CoreAI division.
In a recent interview, Blackley said he believes Microsoft might phase out several business units that are not connected to its CoreAI division, where Sharma previously worked.
"Xbox, like a lot of businesses that aren't the core AI business, is being sunsetted. They don't say that, but that's what's happening. I expect that the new CEO, Asha Sharma, her job is going to be as a palliative care doctor who slides Xbox gently into the night."
The developer also referred to Satya Nadella's words, who believes that AI would "subsume" games "like it will subsume everything." Blackley continued that the business units are to be "ushered into the new world of AI," adding: "Whether or not you agree with it, whether you agree with AI having the potential to do that, whether AI will be successful, is a separate matter."
