Microsoft presented its new strike-based enforcement system developed for Xbox. In a new interview, corporate vice president of Xbox player services Dave McCarthy said Microsoft wants to make community standards more straightforward to users.
"Our job here in managing a community where everyone feels welcome requires us to try a bunch of different tools and approaches. I think if you’re going to have a healthy, vibrant player community, you sort of have to tackle it from all of these angles and you have to commit to regularly improving and investing in it," McCarthy said.
A user receives a strike when they violate community standards. In the new policy, the number of strikes and length of punishment depends on the violation level.
As for the reasons to get a strike, Microsoft mentioned hate speech, profanity, cheating, and harassment. If you get eight strikes, you get banned from using Xbox services (multiplayer and voice chats) for a year.
"I’d encourage all of our players to just continue to participate in our system," added the manager. "Sometimes that involves reporting behavior, even if that behavior isn’t directed against you. And the more we can have our community standards spread out there, the more we can help people stand up for those in our community."
