Yakuza Creator Toshihiro Nagoshi Shares a Few Details on His New Game
Toshihiro Nagoshi shared that though Nagoshi Studio's debut title will have elements of violence, it will be "more like a Quentin Tarantino movie" rather than a thriller or a horror.
In early 2022, Toshihiro Nagoshi who previously served as a chief creative officer at Sega but left the company in October 2021, announced the formation of the new studio dubbed Nagoshi Studio where he will be the President and CEO.
Recently, Nagoshi gave an interview to the German outlet 4Player (via ResetEra) where he revealed why he left Sega, spoke about his partnership with NetEase, and unveiled a few details about Nagoshi Studio's debut title.
Previously, Nagoshi already mentioned that he decided to leave Sega as he wanted "to do something different." And now, he speculated a little more on this thought saying that he already reached the heights in his career being one of the company's executives, while in fact, he didn't want to serve in this role.
"I had reached the top management level of Sega. And I told the current owner, 'Guys, I don't want to be the CEO of Sega here,'" Nagoshi said. "I'm a gamer and a game maker, I want to push my career in that direction as well."
Nagoshi also revealed that he decided to partner with NetEase after the Chinese corporation agreed to fund his studio and support it in terms of technology. At the same time, while NetEase has been primarily known for mobile brands, the developer refused to make games for mobile, instead focusing on creating console titles.
He, however, noted that "modern smartphones are getting better and better and are almost as powerful as consoles", so both NetEase and Nagoshi Studio will benefit from the partnership as they will be able to exchange technologies.
Speaking of Nagoshi Studio's debut title, the developer revealed that the game will "definitely include violence as a game element" but said that the studio will not make it its main focus. According to him, it will not be a horror or thriller, but rather something inspired by the works of Quentin Tarantino – with a similar approach to humor, where comedy and serious topics constantly alternate.
"Something that is only intimidating or only bloody and brutal doesn't suit my taste – I want a human touch, some silliness and some seriousness, that's what I'm in the mood for at the moment," Nagoshi said.
The developer didn't say when the game will be revealed but noted that it may happen much sooner than people expect.
"When I have an idea and feel like implementing it – it soon bubbles out of me. I'm not the type who can hold something like that back for a long time," he said. "So you probably won't have to wait too much longer.... Or rather: I think I'll go public with it much sooner than other developers would!"
