The team praised Hello Games for the reveal of Light No Fire, a multiplayer game with a map the size of Earth.
In case you missed the news, during the recently concluded The Game Awards 2023, Hello Games, the indie studio behind No Man's Sky, unveiled Light No Fire, a new multiplayer survival adventure game with a procedural map that promises to be around the same size as the real-life planet Earth.
Following the reveal, Hello Games' Director Sean Murray took to Twitter to share a couple of memes, humorously comparing the announcement of LNF to the infamous promotional campaign No Man's Sky, which etched its name into the gamedev history for its numerous exaggerations and over-promises that were only fully realized years after the game's initial release.
In a crossover no one expected but everyone wanted to happen, the development team behind Cyberpunk 2077 responded to one of the memes, offering their congratulations to Hello Games on the unveiling of Light No Fire and reassuring the indie team that it's always possible to address and improve a game post-launch, referencing the history of both No Man's Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 itself.
While a good number of commenters enjoyed a good laugh at the comment and moved on, others deemed the joke inappropriate, asserting that the release of unfinished games is no laughing matter.
Such criticisms have their validity, as while Hello Games didn't invent the practice of post-launch game fixes, they certainly played a pivotal role in popularizing it. This has, in turn, opened the gate for other developers to ship half-baked games for full price and polish them in the following years, a practice adopted by Cyberpunk 2077 as well.
In other TGA2023-related news, earlier the event's organizers were criticized for cutting short the speech of Swen Vincke, the head of Larian Studios and a key figure in the development of Baldur's Gate 3, the winner at this year's The Game Awards. To add insult to injury, the "please, wrap it up" warning appeared on the screen just as the developer sought to pay tribute to the late Jim Southworth, Larian's Cinematic Animation Lead, who passed away in November, a timing widely perceived as disrespectful and in poor taste.
