Now the members of ZeniMax Workers Union (ZWU) can have a say in how AI is implemented in their workplace. This significant development follows negotiations with Microsoft subsidiary ZeniMax.
This news follows closely on the heels of the Communication Workers of America (CWA), which played a role in the formation of ZWU, releasing a set of bargaining principles aimed at addressing the usage of AI by companies. These principles aim to ensure that AI usage aligns with the core values of fairness, transparency, inclusivity, and safety.
As AI continues to gain prominence in the creative industry, concerns have been raised regarding its usage and the potential implications it may have for both workers and the general public. Having the ability to actively shape the deployment of AI empowers ZWU members to address these concerns and advocate for responsible and ethical use of the technology.
Besides, the agreement sets down that ZeniMax will give advance notice to the union and engage in negotiations upon request whenever they implement AI in a manner that affects the work of union members.
"It's hard to say how developments with AI may impact our work, but now we can be more confident that the agreement will help to protect us as we navigate the potential adoption of AI into our workflow. It is crucial that all workers have a voice in what role AI plays in their work and can hold their employers accountable for the impacts of its use," stated Dylan Burton, a member of ZeniMax Workers United-CWA and Senior QA tester.
