Xavier Jack shows his secrets.
We've all seen horrible website designs, but rarely do we meet UI that feels good to use. Xavier Jack, the founder of desktop.fm and simply a talented developer, explained how to make interactions feel great.
In a talk for Granola, he shared his insights, showing how "subtle choices like inertia, bounce, camera movement, and micro-interactions can radically change how software feels — and why it matters."
He discusses the concept of Interaction Feel, inspired by "game feel", and shows "how motion, physics, and design combine to create interfaces that feel alive."
Interaction Feel adds depth and makes interactions more emotionally satisfying. Xavier also teaches how wiggle bones and shaders bring stickers to life, why magnetic fields and drag physics make sites more tactile, and why interaction design is more about tweaking and feel than features. Moreover, he shows a physics-based demo for cars that kids actually wanted to play to illustrate his point.
You can see Xavier's works on X/Twitter. For example, enjoy this cool visualization of a Gorillaz song, real-time hand-tracking in browser, and Blender's Wiggle Bones there as well.
