Khasi Hills
Created by Rahul Jadge Pawar.
Khasi Hills draws inspiration from the creator's recent visit to Meghalaya, where the lush greenery, misty landscapes, and vibrant culture of the Khasi Hills captivated the senses. This experience sparked a creative journey to recreate this enchanting environment using Unreal Engine 5.
“Capturing the Essence of Khasi Hills: During my visit, I meticulously collected references—photographs, videos, and mental notes—of the Khasi Hills. The unique landscape, with its rolling hills, dense forests, and winding rivers, offered a perfect canvas for my digital recreation. Every element, from the micro details of the ground to the lushness of the dense trees, had to be carefully studied to ensure the virtual environment was as authentic as possible”, stated the artist.
Players can explore the environment in first-person mode, fully immersing themselves in the lush landscape. Additionally, they can enjoy the environment through a cinematic sequence, allowing them to appreciate the detailed scenery and atmosphere as it unfolds in a visually stunning, guided experience.
To recreate the Khasi Hills in Unreal Engine 5, the process began by sculpting the valleys and hills using the Landscape and brush tools to capture the region's natural topography. PCG tools were then used to populate the environment with trees and foliage, ensuring a realistic, dense forest cover. Nanite displacement was utilized to add fine detail to the ground, enhancing the intricate textures of rocky paths and soil. The most challenging aspect of achieving realism was addressed by using the Ultra Dynamic Sky plugin in combination with Lumen to create dynamic, lifelike lighting and atmospheric effects that change with time and weather, capturing the ever-shifting beauty of the Khasi Hills.
