Check out a useful free tool for the open-source toolkit.
Developer 3d-io launched UV-Packer for Blender, a new version of a free UV packing plugin. This tool for 3D artists, game studios, archviz, photogrammetry, and other artists lets users optimize the packing of UV islands for both organic and hard surface models to minimize wasted UV space.
The developer notes that the plugin is resolution-independent meaning that packing times remain constant. UV-Packer also supports tiled UV layouts. It is described as a multi-threaded tool powerful enough to crunch "thousands of UV islands and millions of polygons in minimum time”.
A demo shows the plugin achieving 48% UV packing efficiency for an 80,000-polygon building model. The new Blender version includes the UV-Packer engine itself, plus a Blender integration plugin.
