A Look at 3D Materials Created for NVIDIA's Portal With RTX

Derk Elshof has shared a sizeable collection of materials made for Portal with RTX using Maya, Marvelous Designer, and Substance 3D.

Today, let's have a look at some incredible 3D materials created for Portal with RTX by Derk Elshof, a talented 3D Artist and Senior Material Artist at NVIDIA.

For those unaware, Portal with RTX is a remastered version of Valve's legendary 2007 Portal, announced nearly a year ago and released on December 8, 2022. Launched as a free DLC for all owners of the original game, the remaster boasted stunning graphical updates, DLSS-powered performance gains, ray tracing, and detailed 4K PBR versions of Portal's textures and materials.

Derk recently showcased some of these materials in a comprehensive ArtStation post, providing us with a more in-depth look at the remaster's impressive surfaces. According to the artist, various 3D software was used in the making of the 3D materials, including Substance 3D Painter/Designer, Maya, and Marvelous Designer.

"My main task was bringing back the nostalgic materials from the original game to 4K PBR, with the feedback and direction from Valve, Vern Andres-Quentin, Hunter Hazen, and with friend and colleague Stan Brown who I had the pleasure working with," commented the creator. "Big thanks to everyone involved in bringing this project to life!"

Attached below are some of the materials and screenshots shared by Derk, you can check out more by clicking this link:

Earlier, Stan Brown, a Senior Material Artist at NVIDIA, also shared a closer look at Portal with RTX's highly-detailed 4K 3D materials:

Speaking of NVIDIA and Valve collaborations, back in August, NVIDIA announced Half-Life 2 RTX, an unofficial community-made RTX remaster of Valve's legendary first-person shooter being developed by Orbifold Studios, a game development studio comprised of four of Half-Life 2's top mod teams.
