A New GTA V AI Mod Lets You Talk To NPCs With A Microphone

Check out this GTA 5 mod powered by 30+ AI models that let players have open-ended conversations in real-time.

Check out a new mod for Grand Theft Auto 5 titled Sentient Streets that gives players the ability to talk to NPCs with a microphone. Powered by AI, the mod was created by Bloc, a modder who previously developed a similar mod for Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord.

Bloc says that the NPCs in Sentient Streets "are powered by 30+ AI models that let players have open-ended conversations in real-time with eccentric cult members, cunning police officers, and unsuspecting civilians."

The author also shared a video demonstrating the AI-powered NPCs in action. The video shows controlling a police officer, standing in a street with three other officers. First, the player chooses which officer will be the player’s partner. You need to approach an officer of your choice, press T to get their attention, and then hold the N key to speak to the officer with a microphone.

The mod makes non-playable characters interpret questions using AI, generate answers, and reply to players. The mod is also capable of giving characters different personalities making NPCs angry or friendly.

The developer claims the mod has been made using Inworld AI, a character engine that allows creators to set up AI-driven characters. Voices are generated with text-to-speech software created by voice tech research company ElevenLabs. You can learn more about the mod here

It's not the first time we covered stories on NPCs driven by AI. Let's take NVIDIA as an example. At Computex 2023 earlier this year, NVIDIA released Kairos, an impressive demo that showcased how a combination of generative AI, Unreal Engine 5, and NVIDIA's RTX and DLSS can be used to create lifelike non-playable characters.
