Activision Blizzard's Microtransactions Brought $5.1b to the Company

The company hit the record of in-game purchases revenue, reaching $5.1 billion making up 61% of the company's total net bookings. Such great results in microtransaction revenue could contribute to Microsoft Gaming's future.

Activision Blizzard hit a new sales record, reaching $5.1 billion from in-game spending in 2021. According to the financial report, during last year, the company also generated $8.8 billion in net revenue, $2.7 billion in net income, and $2.3 billion in operating income.

In-game purchases that include microtransactions, DLC purchases, and subscriptions made up 61% of the company's total net bookings. Although Call of Duty Vanguard sales decreased, Activision still managed to achieve this record.

The company highlighted that during the fourth quarter of 2021, the company saw a boost in monthly active users, reaching 371 million. Besides, the King division driven by the growth of Candy Crush had a record performance surpassing $1 billion annual operating income.

With the Activision results, it becomes clearer why Microsoft is intended to buy the company. With microtransactions and mobile gaming, Microsoft will be able to bolster its ambitions with the Game Pass service as well as with live services, content IP, and monetization.
