Its chatbot's mistake has also played a part.
Shares of Alphabet, Google's parent company, fell 9% after the AI event where Google showed off its innovations on Wednesday. During the presentation, Google promoted its chatbot called Bard, first introduced on Monday.
As noted by CNBC, perhaps investors weren't all that impressed by the ChatGPT competitor or the issue stemmed from Bard's factual mistake that slipped into the advertisement when the tech was brought to Twitter.
In case you missed it, in Google's demo, the chatbot was asked about new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope, and it mentioned that the telescope "took the very first pictures of a planet outside of our own solar system." This statement was incorrect, and people couldn't just walk past it, it's a pretty big problem for a bot that is supposed to compete with ChatGPT, after all.
What makes matters worse is that Google's conference took place the day after Microsoft's event, where it introduced a new, ChatGPT-powered version of Bing.
Google acknowledged the importance of testing and promised to keep an eye on it, so hopefully, mistakes won't happen again, and we will see a useful and correct AI tool from the company.
