O3DE, an "AAA-capable, cross platform open source game engine", is now in developer preview.
03DE was created in partnership with the Linux Foundation and is available under an Apache 2.0 license. The list of Amazon's partners who helped the new engine come to life includes Adobe, Huawei, Intel, Niantic, SideFX, and 15 more companies. With Open 3D Engine, game developers will be able to create royalty-free games and simulations.
"As part of an open source community, O3DE can expand 3D development for games and simulations by providing all the tools that developers need to bring their real-time 3D environments to life. This engine is available under an Apache 2.0 license, so anyone can build and retain their intellectual property, and choose to contribute back to the project," the Amazon team explains in their blog post.
As the team notes, even though O3DE is a whole new product, it has all the features the users loved most about Lumberyard and more. First and foremost, the new engine is modular so pretty much every part of it is a library and that gives developers complete freedom of choosing what to keep in their workspace. The core engine modules, add-ons, and plugins are being referred to as "Gems" in O3DE.
Moreover, O3DE features the new Atom Renderer which supports multiple platforms by providing a modern physically based renderer. It supports ray-tracing on Vulkan, DirectX 12, and Metal (which is, however, still being developed). Atom also features AZSL, a new shading language that allows for more creative freedom. One of the coolest things about Atom's AZSL is that you only need to write your shader once in a unified language and Atom will create native shaders for every platform it supports.
So far, Open 3D Engine is available in developer preview, and Amazon is planning to deliver a production-ready version later this year. You can read more about O3DE here.
