It's time to start anew.
Amazon Games announced it's making a new The Lord of the Rings MMO despite canceling the previous one. It partnered with Embracer Group, which acquired Middle-earth Enterprises last year and thus owns the rights to the universe.
The prior project like this was announced in 2019 but got shelved in a couple of years as the game's developer Leyou Technologies was acquired by Tencent, so it "got very complicated."
"The upcoming game will be an open-world MMO adventure in a persistent world set in Middle-earth, featuring the beloved stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings literary trilogy," says the press release.
It is still in the early stages of production by the Amazon Games Orange County studio, the creators of the popular open-world MMO game New World. You will see the game on PC and consoles when it launches.
Apart from New World, Amazon Games published the action RPG Lost Ark developed by Smilegate RPG and announced publishing agreements with NCSOFT for Throne and Liberty, Bandai Namco Online for Blue Protocol, Crystal Dynamics for the next major Tomb Raider game, and Glowmade and Disruptive Games for unannounced titles.
Amazon Studios also produces The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series for Prime Video, but the new game will not be connected to the show.
