AMD's Engineer is Adding Real-Time Path Tracing to Return to Castle Wolfenstein

The project is based on the ioRtCW engine with a custom DX12 backend.

Senior Graphics R&D Engineer Dihara Wijetunga is working on a real-time path tracer for Return to Castle Wolfenstein called Wolf PT. It is based on the ioRtCW engine with a custom DirectX 12 backend.

The project is in early development, but you can already see the before/after shots:

As you might have noticed, the torches are still a work in progress – according to Wijetunga, the ambient lighting from them will be present in the final version.

The creator chose DirectX 12 with DirectX Raytracing because there are more tools available for debugging, such as PIX, but he said it's possible to implement a secondary Vulkan backend if needed.

The path tracer will be open source, the release date is not set yet. Follow Dihara Wijetunga on Twitter to get the news first. Also, join our new Reddit pageour new Telegram channel, follow us on Instagram and Twitter, where we are sharing breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.
