An Artist Turns Tokyo Into a Stylized 3D Environment With Unreal Engine 5

Shua Llorente showed how a modular method can be used to set up a picturesque 3D scene.

Shua Llorente, a brilliant 3D Artist who specializes primarily in creating stylized environments, has showcased Tokyo, a colorful non-photorealistic 3D scene inspired by the buildings, streets, and districts of Japan's capital.

According to the creator, the environment was set up using a modular approach, with the assets and materials having been made in 3ds Max and Substance 3D Painter. As stated by Shua, the challenging decision to use a fully modular setup was dictated by its being the artist's "least favorite method of creating an environment".

Additionally, the creator utilized Unreal Engine 5 and its fully dynamic global illumination and reflections system Lumen, which was used to set up the lighting. "Surprisingly, this modular method is really fun and efficient when paired with the dynamic lighting, Lumen," commented Shua.

"I tried to be efficient as much as possible in terms of production, so I reused a lot of materials and meshes in this project. With a simple color variation of the same material and the same meshes with just different placement and sizing enables me to create this whole scene," stated the author. "Overall, I'm really happy with this personal project I made and I learned a lot of lessons from it, and I'm looking forward on what I can do next with the latest innovations in the game development programs out there."

The creator also shared a closer look at the 3D assets used to set up the scene:
