Animated, Not Simulated: Check Out This Amazing 3D Hood Rig

According to Dragana Stamenković, a simple sim wouldn't have allowed the team to do what they wanted.

Dragana Stamenković, Lead Animator at Steamroller Animation, has offered a behind-the-scenes look at her upcoming indie film Leap of Faith, showcasing an impressively responsive 3D hood rig built for the movie.

While many animators prefer to rely on cloth simulation software to set up digital garments – a perfectly respectable approach – this particular cowl was rigged and animated entirely by hand. Dragana explained that she didn't trust simulations to achieve the precise feel the team was aiming for. The rig was set up by Creature Supervisor Jared Embley, and the shot was animated by Animation Supervisor Aine' Graham.

As for the film itself, Leap of Faith is being made in collaboration with Steamroller Animation and supported by an Epic MegaGrant from Epic Games. Inspired by Pocahontas, the Biblical story of Exodus, and with strong Arcane-esque vibes, the movie is being developed using a combination of Maya and Unreal Engine. Its first teaser trailer has recently been released, which you can see below:
