Animator Turns Himself Into a Lemon With Blender's Geometry Nodes

Thank god it's not an orange or a pickle.

Will Anderson, a BAFTA-winning Filmmaker and Animator, has recently taken a break from his more serious projects to experiment with Blender's Geometry Nodes, resulting in a project that is both hilarious and impressive from a technical standpoint.

Leveraging the nodes, the artist managed to turn his face into an animated lemon with a moving mouth, similar in its appearance to characters from, and forgive me for mentioning that series, Annoying Orange. As for the technical side of things, Geometry Nodes were used to unwrap the mesh, mask the mesh for the mouth hole, and copy the deform of the 2D mesh onto the 3D target mesh. Additionally, Will utilized ARKit to capture mouth movements in real-time.

According to Will, the method used in this project is largely based on the one showcased in Demeter Dzadik's comprehensive tutorial on using Geometry Nodes for 3D rigging:

We highly encourage you to visit Will's Twitter page and official website to check out his incredible short films.
