Anthropomorphic Robotic Hands with Artificial Hydraulic Muscles

The robot has 36 muscles for the full 27 degrees of freedom and a hydraulic powering system.

Have a look at the Clone Hands – anthropomorphic robotic hands with artificial hydraulic muscles created by Clone Incorporated.

The latest version of the Clone Hand has 36 total muscles for the full 27 degrees of freedom, including all joints in the thumb. All metal elements were deleted from the muscle design, and its bones are now manufactured from a new composite made almost entirely from recyclable, cheaply available materials.

The beta Clone Hand includes 16 magnetic encoders, which measure the joint angles and velocities, and 35 pressure sensors, one for each muscle/valve.

In the video above you can see the hand lifting a 7 kg (15,6 lbs) dumbbell, while the forearm with the hand weighs only 1 kg (2,2 lbs). The robotic arm is operated by water and consumes 200W at peak. Clone Incorporated invents and produces a portable power supply and its own valves to have complete controllability of speed contraction and compress the whole powering system inside a humanlike robot torso.

The torso is also a part of the company's eventual goal to create a fully operating android. It includes 124 muscles in the neck, shoulders, arms, chest, and upper back. The Clone Torso’s spine is rigid with an actuated hinge at the tailbone. There are pressure sensors in every muscle and magnetic encoders embedded into every joint. The lower body will include an off-the-shelf locomotion platform and battery pack.

First of all, Clone Incorporated is creating the robot to be used in environments unsafe for humans, such as nuclear waste facilities, wet labs, meat processors, space stations, and chemical plants. However, it can also be used in many other areas.

"The durable, human-level hand represents the most universal tool for the real world, and every person in the world should own his/her own android that obeys."

The Clone Hands will ship in late 2022, you can fill out an order form on the website to be added to the waitlist. Also, don't forget to join our Reddit page and our Telegram channel, follow us on Instagram and Twitter, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.
