Artist Demonstrates How You Can Make Your 3D Character Breathe with Controller

Insight from Tim van Dulmen.

What makes 3D characters alive? Senior Animator Tim van Dulmen is sure the answer is breathing. Such a deceptively simple motion can make a person out of a mannequin, and this can be done with a controller, as he showed in his Maya demo.

"I have seen a lot of rigs implementing a setup like this and I think it's a great way to quickly add life to the character," he said. "Right now I can control the behaviour on my settings control, this is not necessary an attribute an animator touches, but can tweak if necessary."

Shoulder and chest movements have to be done right to achieve a realistic result, and van Dulmen knows everything about it. You can find more tips on his LinkedIn.

The artist has a lot of fantastic projects showcased, like this collection of models inspired by Treasure Planet, which includes a free Morph rig for Maya and a movie-themed model pack.
