A great showcase by noahefx.
Star Wars never ceases to inspire people, and VFX artist noahefx is one of those under its charm. To refresh his rigid body dynamics (RBD) knowledge, he used Houdini to create a cool laser destruction effect that obliterates the ground and makes you want to rewatch the famous series.
The destruction was made with a Voronoi fracture. The artist "took those inside piece planes, scaled them, and added some noise, and used that in a boolean fracture to get the main large pieces," as he shared on Reddit. "I repeated this with different noises and offsets to get a mixed size of chunks along the edge of the main fractures, and for more detail along the path of the laser, I used the point it followed to add more cutter planes using the same methods of copy and transform/noising up."
We have some other articles you might find useful: check out this amazing laser saber, the cutter inspired by Wolfenstein: The New Order, and this cool colorful beam you can learn to make in under a minute.
