LocalThunk
Balatro's fight with PEGI took a while before its creator LocalThunk finally managed to lower its 18+ rating to 12+. However, the issue isn't over, as the poker-like game is now getting age-restricted on YouTube.
Content creator Balatro University released a video saying that 119 of their 606 videos were given an 18+ rating in a single day. As expected, the reason is gambling. YouTube updated its community guidelines to age-restrict videos with "depictions or promotions of online casino sites or apps."
"Good thing we are protecting children from knowing what a 4 of a kind is and letting them watch [Counter-Strike] case opening videos instead," LocalThunk commented.
He and Balatro University are sure the game has no actual gambling in it: all you do is make card combinations, there is no real money involved. Based on this logic, kids should not watch any card game. Unfortunately, Balatro is a bit too similar to poker for it to help its case.
I wonder if LocalThunk will be able to win this battle as well and what other games will be age-restricted due to the new rules.
