Baldur's Gate 3 Brought Hasbro $90 Million

It's Game of the Year in Hasbro's books as well.

Hasbro, the parent company of Wizards of the Coast, which holds the rights to Dungeons & Dragons, has shared a new financial report, and while its revenue declined 15% last year, the success of Baldur's Gate 3 brought it about $90 million.

While the entertainment segment dropped 31%, the Wizards of the Coast and digital gaming grew 10%, "driven by increase in licensed digital gaming revenue behind Baldur's Gate 3 from Larian Studios and Monopoly Go! from Scopely."

"Baldur's Gate had another healthy quarter," Hasbro chief financial officer Gina Goetter said (via PC Gamer). "I think for the year in totality, Baldur's Gate was around $90 million of revenue."

For those removed from the industry and wondering what Larian Studios' game has to do with the Monopoly maker, here is a little note: Baldur's Gate 3 is based on D&D, so the studio needed permission from Wizards of the Coast to use it, which comes in the form of payments from sales.

This is the first time we've heard something about BG3's financial success. Larian still hasn't shared how many copies of the game have been sold.

Baldur's Gate 3 keeps drawing players half a year after the launch. Its Steam reviews have recently reached 500,000, with 96% of them positive. While engagement will surely decrease with time, Hasbro's CEO Chris Cocks expects "a long tail into 2024 and beyond for this mega hit."

BG3 has definitely influenced the D&D business, so we might see more video games soon. "Baldur's Gate 3 is just the first of several new video games that will be coming out over the next five to 10 years that I think will continue to power that franchise," Cocks said.
