Baldur's Gate 3 Early Access Shadowheart Was Too Much Even for Developers

So they had to give her a chill pill.

Larian Studios

If you played Baldur's Gate 3 in Early Access, you remember how unpleasant most of the companions were, this was actually one of the most popular complaints players had. "They all hate you," people said, and Shadowheart was the worst of the bunch, prickly and aggressive.

Apparently, she was so sassy that even the developers from Larian couldn't really stomach her, so her temper had to be tapered.

"We thought Shadowheart, in the beginning when she was very sassy, she was great because our main thing was, we're going to create a party of people who distrust each other and then they're going to grow to trust each other," said the game's director Swen Vincke (via GamesRadar+.)

So devoted were the developers to making her distrustful that one of them couldn't handle it and confessed: "I really don't like Shadowheart." This and, I assume, players' feedback made Larian reconsider and "heavily dial down" both Shadowheart and other companions. It's hard to like characters who so vehemently don't like you back, after all. Here is a little glimpse of what you might have missed:

And here are some newer, more pleasant versions:

This was not the only thing fans wanted changed, according to Vincke. At some point, they expressed the sentiment toward other elements they viewed as mistakes:

"The players were telling us 'this is a mistake, you shouldn't be doing this, we are saying there's 100 of us saying it now, in the future, it will be millions of us. So fix it now.'"

I have to say I like the new Shadowheart more, and so do other players considering her wild popularity.
