But "we didn't have the fire."

We probably don’t need to waste our time repeating how successful Baldur's Gate 3 has been. Although the developer Larian Studios continues to actively update the game, they have concluded its journey with the franchise. If you missed the news, they have announced that they are embarking on a new project, one which CEO Swen Vincke is confident will be their “best work ever."
Even though Larian is not going to develop Baldur’s Gate 4, Baldur's Gate 3 narrative director Adam Smith told GamesRadar+ at Digital Dragons in Poland earlier this week that Larian did try to "push around ideas for Baldur's Gate 4," but they "didn't excite" anyone.
"We tried, we did start pushing around ideas for Baldur's Gate 4, and they didn't excite us, we didn't have the fire. It feels like it should have been a harder decision than it was, but it wasn't." the narrative director said.

The team assessed their enthusiasm for the project and felt they lacked the passion required to proceed. "We came to the realization, 'do we have that fire?' And we didn't, so it was obvious - we don't do it," Smith continued. He expressed appreciation for working in an environment where creative passion comes before potential earnings.
The team's decision was influenced by their commitment to creating games with meaningful content. In Baldur's Gate 3, they felt they had a story, a setting, and characters they deeply cared about:
"One of the reasons we made [Baldur's Gate 3] was because it would be a game that we could say 'this is a story that we really care about. It's a setting that we really care about, it's characters that we really care about'. And we actually think we have something to say with them. And so I think we said it all. And we shouldn't say there's nothing else to say, but I don't think we want to say it" Smith added.
