Bethesda Director Wants More Shadowdrops Because "We All Have Short Attention Spans Now"
The success of Oblivion Remastered and Hi-Fi Rush definitely made the studio wonder.
Bethesda
Back when Hi-Fi Rush was suddenly released without much word and marketing from Bethesda, players were confused, especially since the game became a huge hit for the studio, even without ads.
However, the company decided to do the same with Oblivion Remastered, shadowdropping it only to sell tons of units. You should get used to it, by the way, as this success made Bethesda rethink its strategy, so we might get more surprise launches in the future.
Bethesda Game Studios' director Tom Mustaine wants more such drops, as he told GamesRadar+.
"Todd Howard, the boss man, he's wanted to shadowdrop things for a long time because it's so great to be able to say, 'Here's the thing, get it today.' It's very valuable."
Another reason is that "we all have short attention spans now," according to Mustaine. "There's Grand Theft Auto, for example. I want that today, right? So it is an interesting strategy... I don't have any ideas of what would be next, but I hope it's not the last. Personally, I think it was great to own the internet for that day and, you know, give people exactly what they want the moment we talk about it. I'm a fan of that personally, but I'd love to see more people do it."
I have to agree with him, but it's not because of attention spans but because waiting for years after the announcement simply dulls the excitement but increases expectations, especially if the studio delays the release. That's partly why some people believe GTA 6 will disappoint many players.
The same is said about The Elder Scrolls 6, which will likely be Bethesda's next shadowdrop, especially since Howard once said that he regrets revealing the game so early.
