Blender Is Hiring: New Job Openings for Software & DevOps Engineers

Blender announced its new job openings for developers who are passionate about all things 3D.

Carlos Fernandez Puertolas

Blender opened two new positions for "passionate developers," in the company's own words: the team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer and a Junior/Regular DevOps Engineer. Both positions are full-time jobs, except that the Junior/Regular DevOps Engineer opening is also an on-site, in-house offer.

The Software Engineer needs proficiency in C++ and a solid understanding of Python scripting. For the DevOps Engineer, good knowledge of scripting in Python or Shell is a must. Both of these require experience with Git/Git LFS.

Here are the full lists of requirements for both:

Senior Software Engineer

Requirements:

  • C++ proficiency.
  • Experience developing cross-platform applications.
  • Tools: CMake, Git/Git LFS.
  • Understanding of Python scripting.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
  • Open-minded and willing to work iteratively, based on feedback.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Social, easy to communicate with, friendly, empathetic.

Nice to haves:

  • Basic understanding of GPU programming stacks: OpenGL, Vulkan, Metal.
  • Experience working with open-source projects.
  • Relocation to Amsterdam to join the team at the Blender HQ – we will consider people wanting to work remotely, as well.
  • Drive to expand the area of interest and influence.

Junior/Regular DevOps Engineer

Requirements:

  • Good knowledge of scripting in Python or Shell.
  • Ready to experiment with new technologies and software to meet development requirements and limitations.
  • Knowledge of version control systems (Git/Git LFS).
  • Basic knowledge of Unix-based systems and command line usage.
  • Basic knowledge of the infrastructure-as-code concept.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
  • Open-minded and willing to work iteratively, based on feedback.
  • Able to work in a team environment.
  • Social, easy to communicate with, friendly, empathetic.
  • Able to work on-site from Blender HQ in Amsterdam.

Nice to haves:

  • Experience with running self-hosted services (professional, homelab, or cloud-based).
  • Understanding of tools: OpenTofu, Terraform, Ansible, SaltStack, Docker, Proxmox VE, etc.
  • Experience with containerization (Docker/K8s/Podman/LXC), virtualization (QEMU/KVM), network booting (iPXE).
  • Basic understanding of networking protocols (DHCP, DNS, TCP/IP).
  • Experience with Linux, macOS, and Windows operating systems.
  • Understanding of the development cycle for mobile platforms (Android and iOS).
  • Experience working with open-source projects.
  • Drive to expand the area of interest and influence.

While on-site work is not a must for the Software Engineer, Blender states that it will "consider people wanting to work remotely." This might mean that those residing in or willing to relocate to Amsterdam are Blender's priority candidates, so if you're eyeing this position, keep that in mind.

The annual salary for both positions depends on the candidates' experience. Blender is willing to pay its future Senior Software Engineer between 56K and 82K euros gross, and the Junior/Regular DevOps Engineer will get between 42K and 66K euros gross. There's a budget for training or education, as well as paid holidays and 5 weeks of vacation.

This is a once-in-a-blue-moon opportunity because, as Blender itself says, the company is a small team of around 50 people. Considering that Blender is the most popular 3D tool out there, the competition is about to be tough. If you feel like you have the right skill set and if you're interested in the jobs, you can see more details here.
