And it happened just 85 days after the game had been released.
On August 29, 2023, Blizzard Entertainment made the first discount on Diablo IV in the amount of 20-25% depending on the edition. This action was rather unexpected since it was the first time for the company to act this way. The discount will last until September 4.
Here is the information on the discount:
- Diablo IV: Standart Edition – $54,59 (-22%)
- Diablo IV: Digital Deluxe Edition – $71,99 (-20%)
- Diablo IV: Ultimate Edition – $74,99 (-25%)
In addition to Diablo IV, other games from the developer's catalog also became cheaper during the Activision Blizzard sale. The price of Diablo II: Resurrected temporarily dropped to $13,19, Diablo Prime Evil Collection to $19,79, World of Warcraft: Dragonflight to $24,99, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II to $34,99.
As mentioned before, such behavior is extremely uncharacteristic for Blizzard, who is known to be quite reserved when it comes to reducing prices for their games. For example, in the case of Warcraft III: Reforged, the first discount only happened three and a half years after its release.
The most likely reason for the discount, however, lies on the surface. Presumably, the main rationale for the reduced prices stems from the general decrease in the audience's interest in Diablo IV caused by the despised 1.1 patch, which slowed down the game's progression, locked down some of the game's levels, caused unusually long queue times, and, as a result, lowered the game's Metacritic score to as low as 2.0, 1.6 at the time of writing this.
The good news is that the team has seemingly acknowledged the negative feedback from the audience, saying that although they have no plans on reverting the 1.1 update or any of its controversial changes, they "don't plan on doing a patch like this ever again".
