Bloomberg: Blizzard Canceled Future Overwatch 2 PvE Content

What's left of that sequel then?

Bloomberg reports that Blizzard has canceled all future PvE content in Overwatch 2, and if you stopped playing after the long-promised Hero mode was shut down, here is the story of this important but failing part of the game.

While the Hero mode died without being born, Overwatch 2 still had PvE missions, which I can't tell you about in detail as I refuse to pay real money for them, and I'm not alone it seems: Bloomberg's sources say that back in August 2023, the game's developers were told they shouldn’t have received any bonuses because of its poor financial performance. Then, Blizzard covered some of the bonuses, but this month, they received nothing.

But back to PvE. In January, Activision Blizzard and Xbox lost 1,900 employees, and Overwatch's PvE department took the hit hard – most of the team was laid off, which made the ex-devs fear for the future of the mode. And they were right to be worried: Bloomberg says that Overwatch 2 developers were informed that the company doesn't plan to finish the remaining planned PvE content "and will instead double down on competitive player vs. player gameplay."

Blizzard's spokesman Andrew Reynolds said that last year, the company started "focusing on the foundational team-based experience, building the game alongside our players, and more quickly addressing their feedback."

He mentioned that the decision was made based on feedback and the company is "exploring new experiences, big and small."

Despite the sad news, some members of the Overwatch 2 team are reportedly optimistic and hope the change will "lead to a turnaround."

Earlier this month, Blizzard announced the return of all heroes into the free field – no need for a paid battle pass anymore. It's awesome but makes you think: what's the difference between Overwatch 1 and its sequel now? Was the shift worth it? While I enjoy its new look and mechanics, I'm not a fan of the shop and battle passes at all and miss the days when you could get any skin by just playing the game.
