Borderlands Online MMO Is Playable Again

The long-lost 2015 Chinese project has been restored by the community.

The "long-lost" 2015 MMO spin-off Borderlands Online has been brought back by the community and is now playable for free. The project supports native 4K, runs at 120+ FPS, offers an unlocked FOV, and includes English localization.

Modder EpicNNG shares that over a year ago, they tackled finding and restoring the project, which was "considered lost forever." The creator notes that the build is currently in playtest, so inconveniences like "bugs, broken skills, animations, and server outages" might be expected.

"We wanted to wait until the end of the year to release, but sadly due to how powerful AI is becoming, it became clear to us that in order to avoid all of our hard work being for nothing, it was now or never," comments EpicNNG. The modder also emphasizes that no generative AI was used for the updated textures or translations.

Borderlands Online, shortened to BLOL, was released in China in 2015 and canceled shortly after. The game is completely free, without any paid features or microtransactions now or in the future. You can even play it offline; if a server goes down, you can host it locally on your system, but you won't have multiplayer.

According to EpicNNG, shortly after the release, the project exceeded 6,000 users, with over 1000 players creating accounts on Borderlands Online in just 4 hours.

You can play Borderlands Online here and join the project's Discord.
