Breakdown: Animating Tiny Character With Massive Two-Handed Weapon

Learn how to create strong, readable silhouettes in motion through Laura Lico's work on Moss: Book 2.

Polyarc, the developer behind the acclaimed Moss VR game series, officially announced the studio's closure on September 11. Around the same time, Vanessa Ruffra chose to break down one of the animation shots featuring Quill, the series' protagonist, made by Laura Lico, a poignant reminder that games and studios are not forever, but the craft behind them can continue to teach long after they're gone.

Here, you can see Lico demonstrate how weight and characterization can coexist, even under the extreme demands of speed and gameplay. As Ruffra puts it, the real challenge is to stop thinking of the character and their weapon as two separate entities, they need to move and react as one coherent system.

"It had been stuck in my head for a long time, as it is truly memorable. In review, it's the kind of absolute reference you pull out to remind people what a strong silhouette looks like in action.

The more you break it down, the more you see a concentration of animation decisions of striking clarity: weight, characterization, timing, overlaps... and above all else, a silhouette that remains perfectly readable under conditions that should have made it a mess."

In her article, Ruffra breaks down three key challenges of this movement and shares some takeaways on creating strong silhouettes. To make them work, you need to strip everything back to three poses: anticipation, impact, and recovery. If they clearly communicate the attack, the details can bring the animation to life. If not, no amount of polish can save it.
