Breakdown: Making a Resident Evil-Style Mansion in Unreal Engine

Learn how to make a gloomy Victorian-era mansion with this detailed breakdown posted by Matt Lamb.

Yesterday, Environment Artist Matt Lamb unveiled an abandoned mansion modular environment inspired by the Victorian era. According to the author, this project was made as a final exam at Escape Studios – a visual effects academy that offers short courses VFX, Game Art, Animation and Motion Graphics, and other specialist disciplines. The entire scene was made in ZBrush, Substance 3D Painter, Maya, and Unreal Engine 4.

What's more, the author has also released a lengthy breakdown, explaining the creation of modular assets, showing how the props for the scene were created, demonstrating the texturing and rendering processes, explaining how the cobwebs were made, and more. Some of you might remember Matt for one particular project that we here at 80 Level enjoy very much. Back in 2021, Matt, along with Kostas "KC" Ch.Triston BeadleEmily DerveyKaan YasaJosef McGrathFirina A Farah Diba, and Joshua LeBrun, created a breathtaking scene that reimagined London as a DLC for Bioshock Infinite. Back then, Matt was responsible for level design, modular architecture, signage, lighting, and post-process and also released an in-depth breakdown regarding those topics.
