Breakdown Of Real-Time Datamoshing In Unreal Engine 5

James "JAM2GO" Hodge explained the datamosh effect, detailing its mechanics and showcasing examples of Unreal-powered datamoshing.

Over the past month, Game Developer James "JAM2GO" Hodge has been experimenting with a real-time glitchy datamosh effect, which can make a game "borderline unplayable", yet give it a striking and unique visual appearance.

If you've ever wondered how datamoshing works, check out James' latest video, where he provides a detailed breakdown of the technique, compares it with the hall of mirrors effect, traces its roots back to Caroline Polachek's art, highlights how video games like Remedy's Control incorporate similar visual styles, and recreates datamosh effect with Unreal Engine.

James suggests using Petyu's Datamosh plug-in, which contains a post-process shader and simulates the original video editing technique in which the footage is manipulated to look "trippy", usually by manual compression.
