Its extra resources will help Affinity "deliver much more, much faster."

Canva has acquired Serif, the developer of Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, and Affinity Publisher, apps familiar to graphics designers.

"In Canva, we’ve found a kindred spirit who can help us take Affinity to new levels. Their extra resources will mean we can deliver much more, much faster. Beyond that, we can forge new horizons for Affinity products, opening up a world of possibilities which previously would never have been achievable," said Ashley Hewson, the CEO of Affinity.

He thanked users for their feedback, which "inspired us to push boundaries and continuously improve, and we’re excited to embark on this new chapter together."

In the Q&A section, Serif mentioned that it didn't plan to sell the company, but when Canva contacted it, "there was something about it which just felt right." Canva's tools and culture feel similar to Serif's, and together, they can "produce the world’s most comprehensive visual communications offering."

The Affinity apps (vector and raster editors along with the publishing software) will not be affected by the acquisition. Serif says their pricing model stays the same at the moment, but I wouldn't be surprised if it changed to Canva's subscription later.

For now, we should expect an integration between Affinity and Canva in the future, "particularly in consideration of the workflows of enterprise customers." Most importantly, no layoffs have been announced in relation to the shift.
