CD Projekt RED On Developers Shaping UE Advancement

Jarosław Rudzki from CD Projekt RED shared how CD Projekt has significantly contributed to the development of Unreal Engine.

Presented by CD Projekt RED, this talk aims to familiarize viewers with common bottlenecks that limit the scale and interactivity of games built with Unreal Engine, offering brief explanations of high-level strategies to address these challenges.

CDPR explains the difficulty of introducing changes to the existing Gameplay Framework and points to a small feature implemented by Epic in collaboration with CDPR and released with UE5.3, commonly referred as Decoupling.

Leveraging years of expertise in efficient open-world streaming, CD Projekt RED introduced a new streaming system. The importance of Decoupling lies in the low cost of maintaining it. Epic can continue to enhance its Gameplay Framework, and Decoupling can be used in all those areas where "vanilla" implementation limits what can be created. Given Unreal Engine's use across various game genres, there is no one way to fit all.

Jarosław believes there has to be an active exchange of ideas, even if they are not fully implemented yet. "I don't know if the Decoupling feature will be extended in the mainline Unreal Engine – our experiments proved it could be –  but people using it or experimenting with it and sharing results would make a good argument for it" , he added.

Normally, tech discussions follow a game's release, but CDPR believes that since some of their innovations are already available to UE users, you can start developing your own solutions now.
