CDPR's First Original IP Will Be a Role-Playing Game

The company wants to continue making the games it is best known for.

It seems that CD Projekt RED's first original IP codenamed Hadar is going to be a role-playing game, according to the company's SVP of business development, Michał Nowakowski.

The game was first announced on Tuesday during CD Projekt Group Strategy Update, where it was described as an entirely new IP being created directly by CDPR. The company noted that it started working on an idea for this new project several years ago with early-stage conceptual work commencing in 2021.

Currently, the team is still working on basic concepts and "laying the groundwork for this new franchise", so basically, the development of the project has not formally started.

When, during the conference call on Tuesday, CD Projekt was asked when it plans to start pre-production of the game, Nowakowski replied that the company cannot provide any specific date yet. "We’re still at the phase of building that setting and this is the part that’s preoccupying the core team working on it," he said.

Speaking of the genre of the upcoming title, Nowakowski noted that CD Projekt RED is known for its role-playing games, and the new project will not be an exception.

"When it comes to the genre, we do certain types of games and I think it’s safe to assume that we want to continue to do the games within that kind of genre, so you can imagine what kind of game to expect," Nowakowski said.

Nowakowski shied away from further details on the project. Currently, everything we know about Hadar is that it will be the first project of the Polish studio that is not based on an existing franchise – the universe for it is being created by the developers themselves from scratch.
