CDPR Shares How Kingdom Come & Baldur's Gate 3 Inspired The Witcher 4

CD Projekt Red co-CEO also talks about what kind of characters they want to build.

While CD Projekt Red is working on The Witcher 4, which will not be released until at least 2027, the RPG world has seen several strong competitors in recent years, such as Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3. Interestingly, these two games will also influence the next title in The Witcher series.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Adam Badowski, CD Projekt Red co-CEO, talks about the impact these titles have had on the direction of the upcoming sequel.

"I love Kingdom Come because of the realism and the feeling, the sense of humor," Badowski said. "The Kingdom Come kind of simulation, it's great. There's so many options, you can change the world, it's super great. And we would like to keep that, we'd like to follow this trend as well. So these are our next steps for sure."

"At the same time, we would like to build very fleshy, very well-motivated characters. So it's kind of in contradiction from time-to-time. That's a great design challenge."

He continues to talk about the influence of Larian Studios' Baldur’s Gate 3, saying that it is less direct, considering the way players interact with characters is quite distinct.

"We like to fully build the characters, understand the past and the future of the character motivation. That's why it takes so much time. [In BG3] there are great characters as well but sometimes your choices, because there's freedom of choices in Larian's work, it pushes you to use different tricks than ours."

While admitting that there is "a lot of inspiration and what BG3 did," he clarifies that CDPR is definitely "not going to make a game like Larian did." He continues, "That's the kind of game they can make. But a lot of stuff with how the characters can interact with the world and what it does was for sure some inspiration to us."

"I think we're still more sticking to what was The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk, even if we don't want to just make another game like that, just with better graphics," he concluded.

In other news about The Witcher 4, it received its first-ever tech demo and a new cinematic trailer during the State of Unreal 2025 held a few days ago. It was confirmed that the demo featured no actual gameplay.
