Global Illumination has previously developed a Minecraft-like open-source sandbox experience titled Biomes.
OpenAI, the developer of AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT, announced they decided to acquire Global Illumination, a New York–based startup using AI to craft creative tools, infrastructure and digital experiences.
The announcement marks OpenAI’s first public acquisition in its roughly seven-year history. The two teams decided not to disclose the terms of the deal.
"We’re very excited for the impact they’ll have here at OpenAI," OpenAI wrote. "The entire team has joined OpenAI to work on our core products including ChatGPT.”
Global Illumination was originally launched by Thomas Dimson, Taylor Gordon, and Joey Flynn, and backed by VC firms Paradigm, Benchmark, and Slow. The team is known for their products designed and built at Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Google, Pixar, and Riot Games.
Dimson, for example, acted as director of engineering at Instagram setting up the platform’s discovery algorithms – Dimson contributed to the development of Instagram’s Explore tab experience, feed, Stories ranking, IGTV, and general data engineering.
Global Illumination has recently created Biomes, a Minecraft-like open-source sandbox multiplayer game built for the web. The teams didn't share their plans for the project. What's your take on the acquisitions? Why did they decide to join forces?
