Isaac Pandian's lovely art.
Have a look at this cozy dancing animation Isaac Pandian created in Blender. The 2D-like movements look hand-drawn, but the project, including the cloth simulation, was made in 3D.
Pandian has kindly provided a short breakdown of the skirt so you can make your own. As it usually is with cartoon-like art, Grease Pencil was a huge part of the workflow. You need to be ready for some manual strokes to get the richest results. You can find some extra details in the post.
The model itself is just legs, which were set in motion by the stepped animation technique. Here is how Pandian did it:
Graph Editor Method
- Open the Graph Editor and add a stepped interpolation modifier to your keyframes.
- Set the step size to 2, 3, or 4, depending on your requirements. If you have a lot of channels, you can copy the modifier after selecting all the channels by hitting “A” on top of the channel window and click the paste button in the modifiers panel.
Output Properties Method
- Go to Output Properties > Frame Range.
- Set the Steps from 1 to 2, then render out a PNG sequence to capture the stepped effect. This won’t work in the video sequence.
The artist says that both methods can help animate the character and cloth in 2 seconds.
