Check Out Mocap References Behind Mortal Kombat's Sektor Animations

Senior Cinematic Animator at NetherRealm Studios Brad Faucheux shared a glimpse at the creative process.

Brad Faucheux, Senior Cinematic Animator at NetherRealm Studios, shared a sneak peek at the behind-the-scenes of creating the animation for Mortal Kombat's Sektor.

The creator showcased reference videos for the animation. It's amazing how much effort is put into the process, as the movements are based on real-life footage of a person. Of course, there are no flamethrowers around, and they are replaced with materials at hand, like a vacuum cleaner, but this doesn't prevent the creators from capturing lifelike physics and making the animations look realistic and smooth.

As Brad Faucheux shared in the comments, the animation starts with mocap and "evolves piece by piece into keyframes."

Take a look at another awesome artwork, the Deadpool animation created by Robert Morrison, an Artist who worked on The Last of Us Part I, God Of War (2018), and more, with a rig by Animator Kiel Figgins (at first there's a WIP, which is followed by a finalized rendered version):

Also, check out HEAT, an online library with more than 1,000 high-quality motion-capture animations that can be seamlessly integrated into your games or 3D projects.

Another useful tool for creating mocap animations is KeenTools' professional facial mocap add-on for Blender, which offers a wide range of functions, such as capturing facial performance and head motion, creating digital doubles from video frame snapshots, de-aging, converting facial animations to ARKit blendshapes or Rigify rigs, and many more.
