Check Out Noir-Style Mixed-Media Animated Series Created Using Blender
Il Baracchino, a gritty animated series about a stand-up comedy club, is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Blender unveiled the story of creating Il Baracchino, an adult animated series made entirely within the software. The Annie-nominated mixed-media series was written and directed by Nicolò Cuccì and Salvo Di Paola, with the animation studio Megadrago based in Palermo, Italy.
Il Baracchino, an Amazon Prime Original in Italy produced by Lucky Red and Megadrago, immerses viewers in a gritty yet vibrant world of stand-up comedy. The story centers on Claudia, an aspiring art director trying to save a fading but legendary comedy club. To bring it back to life, she assembles an unusual group of performers, like a chain-smoking pigeon.
The project features a stellar cast of major Italian stand-up comedians and actors. What makes the film stand out is that it uniquely mixes various animation techniques, from 3D to stop-motion and traditional 2D.
"This wasn't going to be a traditional 3D animated series. We wanted a mixed-media show that blended 3D animation, stop-motion puppetry, and various artistic styles while maintaining a consistent feel throughout," Nicolò Cuccì says. "The noir aesthetic was central to our vision: a dark, stylized world where comedy and drama could coexist."
The artist explained that to maintain visual consistency between different techniques, they grounded every approach in the same core animation principles, creating a unified visual language for 3D, stop motion, and mixed media.
