Da (Tatsu) Li demonstrated a hot result of his VFX work: a realistic lava simulation built from scratch.
He calls it "one of the biggest challenges" in his recent FX work, and no wonder: the sizzling substance takes a certain skill to make right, from its look to its particular texture.
As Li revealed, most of the visual details were driven by shader work, "with a customized rest attribute to enhance the level of detail between simulated points."
"I still don’t think this is the final answer, and there’s still plenty of room for improvement – but I’m grateful for the opportunity to take on this challenge, for being part of Tokyo MER, and for Ryota Deishi's beautiful compositing work that brought everything together."
