Game Developer Gary Whitton has showcased some non-Euclidean portal magic using an Unreal Engine Marketplace asset allowing you to easily create portals to other worlds.
Game Developer and Animator Gary Whitton has demonstrated a really cool and uncanny portal mechanic with dimensional doorways where the world inside is slightly different and distorted in relation to the outside.
According to the artist, this is an old project he's been testing various approaches to design this mechanic on and now is getting back into it again, finding the third-person camera the trickiest part. The core logic here is from an Unreal Engine Marketplace asset using Opacity Masks driven by a 'portal' plane and collision switching but all in the same space.
The asset in question is Creating Portal To Another Reality by Zegi.Assets, specifically designed to create worlds that differ in minor details such as materials from the original one. Perfect for puzzles and abstract games, it's based on the function of the material, not on Render Targets with Scene Capture, and doesn't feature actual teleportation with the objects only changing their properties. You can make an unlimited number of portals.
Creating Portal To Another Reality comes with Blueprints, full documentation, and supports Unreal Engine 4.18 – 4.27, 5.0 – 5.3 for both classic mode and VR. The latest update even lets you carry a portal around like a mirror!
Creating Portal To Another Reality is available at Unreal Engine Marketplace at $13.99.
