3D Artist and Animator Nagyunagi_ showcased a dramatic animation of Tingyun from Honkai: Star Rail brought to life using Blender, along with a behind-the-scenes look at their creative process.
Nagyunagi_ shared some insights into their workflow, explaining that for effects, they typically animate flat polygons, with little to no retouching. Compositing is kept simple, with only a glare effect used.
This method is used for various effects – slashes, whirlwinds, and more. One additional tip from the artist: having the effect pass close to the camera adds impact and makes it look even cooler.

Showing another work, Nagyunagi_ also shared a piece of advice that if the flat look of the polygons starts to stand out, you can improve the look by refining the shape with shape keys:
