Gamers have awarded Sandfall Interactive's masterpiece with a score of 9.8 on PC and 9.7 on consoles.
Defying concerns that Oblivion Remastered's surprise release would overshadow any competing video games, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has emerged as a breakout hit, marking another major victory for AA and indie studios in 2025.
After selling over one million copies in just three days, receiving praise from French President Emmanuel Macron, and becoming a top contender for Game of the Year 2025 in the eyes of many – all with a modest team of around 60 creators – Sandfall Interactive's magnum opus has added one more accolade to its list, now earning the title of Metacritic's highest-rated video game of all time.

As of this writing, Expedition 33 stands at a mind-boggling 9.8 Metacritic user score on PC with 1.9K+ reviews, and an equally astonishing 9.7 on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, with 7.7K+ and 630+ reviews, respectively.
Whether you consider the PC or PS5 rating as the primary benchmark, both 9.7 and 9.8 are the highest video game user scores ever recorded, surpassing legendary GOAT titles like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (9.0), Baldur's Gate 3 (9.2), The Last of Us (9.2), Half-Life 2 (9.1), and Heroes of Might and Magic III (9.3).
Though it doesn't carry the same flair as the player score, the game's rating according to gaming journalists is still impressive and currently stands at 92, making Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 critics' most acclaimed game in 2025 so far.
Over the weekend, the greatest "non-J JRPG" also shattered its own record for concurrent Steam players, reaching an all-time peak of over 145,000 users. This milestone places Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as the ninth-best performing Steam title of 2025, surpassing several major AAA releases like Sid Meier's Civilization VII, Assassin's Creed Shadows, Avowed, and the PC version of Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
